| Name: | Chase Stein |
|---|---|
| Birthdate: | 1988 |
Character Name: Chase Stein
Series: Runaways
Gender: Male
Age: 18
Job Request: Factory
The Item: a switchblade
Brief Personality: Chase looks (and, most of the time, acts) like a typical jock, good-humored, slightly dim, and fond of not-particularly-clever off-color jokes, pop culture, and illegal substances. However, he is highly "street-smart," with a good sense of how to understand and manipulate systems and power dynamics to get what he wants . Personal interactions, though, he ain't so good at. He is not book-smart, and says so frequently. He has a strong dislike for most authority figures and a distinct tendency to bravado and bluster. He's a little shadier than he acts and a little less shady than he talks. He is fond of children.
Powers/Abilities: "A bad upbringing." A good getaway driver. A natural aptitude for machines.
History: Chase's history is largely defined by his parents. The son of two genius scientists, his father mentally and physically abused him, calling him dumb, lazy, and evil. While Chase claims to hate his father, it is clear that these labels continue to shape Chase's self-image. In high school, Chase played lacrosse, experimented with drugs, flunked a few classes, and once a year spent time with five other children of prominent Los Angeles citizens. Then, when Chase was seventeen, he and the other children witnessed their parents kill a girl in an ancient rite designed to bring about the end of the world.
Understandably, this caused issues.
The children (The Runaways) defeated their parents (The Pride) and vowed to fight crime in order to make up for the sins of their parents. Chase entered into a long-term relationship with Gerturde Yorkes, whom he came to consider the love of his life and who broke up with him after it was revealed that Chase had concealed the fact that another member of the Runaways had kissed him. Shortly afterwards, Gert was killed by a resurrected member of the Pride (long story). She managed to pass on a declaration of love and a psychic link to a 87th century dinosaur (probably a deinonychus). After her death, Chase went a little bit crazy, attempting everything short of murder (including suicide) to bring her back and almost destroying the Runaways in the process. He's calmed down a little since then, but the whole experience took him to a bad place that he's still trying to get out of.
